Love is the Fulfilling of the Law
ON GOD; Part III
This is now part three of our series called ON GOD which will be, for the most part, centered around the Christian thoughts of God but will at the same time include, as it has likely already, some esoteric Truths with which the Christian Churches as we know them today will not address. The reasons for the churches lack of understanding of and appreciation of some of these Truths likely stems from the early centuries and medieval times where the church controlled much of the thoughts of right and wrong and good and evil and cemented its hold on the minds of men and thereby dictating much of the religious thought as it is still understood today. We have covered in these posts our ideas on the concept of reincarnation and we have touched upon a related idea in karma which in many ways is merely the formalization of the Christian idea of reaping what you sow. We have touched upon the Nature of God and, as recently as yesterday, we spoke in some detail regarding the Aspects of God in terms that go beyond the simple acceptance of the church teaching of the Trinity of God as He exists in “the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost” (Matthew 28:19). Whenever and wherever we can we have and will continue to furnish biblical references to what it is that we are saying thereby leaving it to you, the reader, to discern the correctness of our philosophy.
There are many words that the Christian church deems to be inappropriate, or rather that what is understood by them is deemed inappropriate, and much of this is focused on esoteric ideas and words and at times personalities. In many ways this thought process has likely been helpful to the masses as it protected them from the unscrupulous character who practiced the lower side of any phenomena. However, the world is not black and white but it is many many shades of grey and within this range is much that is beneficial and good and the time is likely come for the churches to better understand what it is that is happening around them in the world that is of a Truly spiritual nature. The simplicity of the church doctrines and dogmas are no longer sufficient for a growing number of people who are being attracted to the esoteric and the occult and to the formulation of ideas like we have here in this blog. It is become an increasingly fragile position for the church to eschew the very thought of things occult while parts of the church today champion the super-natural aspects stemming from the power of Faith. The lack of interdenominational agreement is a great hindrance to the common understanding of the people that they are committed to serve. Some of the more recent and more popular movements seem a far cry from the reality of Christ’s teachings as understood by the older parts of the church and outsiders like us and one’s view of the reality of the Master’s words can become greatly distorted by some of the teachings that seem on the surface to be designed to bring in people and tithes.
The point here is that there is the old church teachings and there is the new and in neither can WE say that the words of the Master are properly depicted and interpreted as they seem most often depicted and interpreted according to a particular doctrine and theology. More importantly, as we said early on in these posts, the words of the Master are made to play second fiddle to the writings of the Apostle Paul which are generally used out of context and, again, in support of any given doctrine. In our view, the words of the Master should reign supreme and the writings of Paul and the other Apostles should be used in support of what the Master has said. This is our objective in these posts and in bringing forth esoteric knowledge we seek to support the teachings of the Master and His apostles and to interpret all in accordance with His intent which is in Love and in fairness to ALL.
We seek also to promote the concept of GoodWill as it is enunciated by the Master and His Saints and which can be seen as the essential message of the Christ and which we accurately portray as the major emphasis of one’s Life when the Christ Within becomes the active focus of a man’s conscious personality. As we continue through our look at God in His three Aspects and as we continue to explain, as best as we can comprehend them, our view of the Powers and the Forces that are inherent in each Aspect, we will keep a steady eye on the words of the Master as they support our understanding and as our understanding supports His words. As usual, much of what we say will disagree with or be outside of the normal Christian teachings and doctrinal beliefs and we will try to mediate our view with theirs whenever feasible and possible.
As we have discussed, so much of the Christian doctrines in most all denominations are surrounding ideas that were formulated by men based upon a few words which at times are not even related. The Trinity is a classic example of an entire doctrine that is based on a single line on scripture and enhanced by the mental pictures found in some words that are never defined nor explained in the source book, the bible. Other ideas like the one we allude to above, saved by grace, are also the doctrines of men based on a few words by Paul or another of the epistle writers and which has no foundation in the words of the Master. In fact we interpret the point that Paul is making quite differently. The Master railed against the Pharisees and the scribes regarding their doctrine and this same idea should be carried forward into our day as so much else of His sayings are. The Master tells them that the prophesies of Esaias are as True in Jesus day as they were when the prophet said them about Jerusalem before the captivity many years before. His message should also be here understood and His ideas should carry through to our doctrines today. Jesus says: “Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men” (Mark 15:7-9).
It is unfortunate that the picture that many a Christian has today of God the Father is one that is steeped in the superstitions and the vagueness of the presentation of the Old Testament and not in the ideas of mercy and Love as presented to us by the Master. There is an understanding in the stories of the Old Testament and in the ideas of God as the warrior and the tyrannical leader who demanded the killing of innocents in battle that we do not see today. We could posit that those writings are much like the man of today purporting to be hearing God and declaring ‘God told me this and that ……’. As we have previously said the whole of one’s hearing from God, or what one perceives as God, is then colored by the conscious personality and it is only by the ensuing action that one can tell the True source of revelation. Remembering that the Old Testament is from a very superstitious and barbarous time, we can perhaps understand the nature of some of the revelation that these Jewish leaders received and why they may have been interpreted as they were and thereby acted upon.
We will portray God as the Master did and we will expand upon His teachings with our ideas and revelations and the teachings of the ages as they apply. There is no shortage of ideas and writings about the subject of God and the workings of the universe and man’s relationship to it all. There is much insight in the Old Testament apart from the history and much also in the Hindu, the Buddhist and the Islamic writings and it is in the synthesis of this all that we can find the Truth. Using again the concept of reincarnation we can see that the Master is very vague on the subject; He never denies it nor supports it though some parts of the scripture allude to it. On the other hand the Hindu scriptures are replete with reference to reincarnation although it is generally misunderstood by the mainstream of religious thought; a common impediment in religion. The Buddha’s teachings are rather clear but His speaking on the subject of reincarnation is more attune to one’s getting oneself out of the cycle of birth, death and rebirth than it is about the concept itself. This teaching, getting out of the cycle, is much the same as the Master’s and is intimately tied to the Christs ideas of discipleship and the Kingdom.
In closing today and in keeping with our thought above regarding the promotion of GoodWill we again repeat the Master’s words on Love and on Brotherhood as well as our own understanding which, when all taken together, is GOODWILL.
“The first of all the commandments is, Hear , O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this , Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these“
(Mark 12:29-31)
We should here keep in mind two things; first that the scribe with whom the Master was conversing when He said this saying acknowledged to Jesus that this was the Truth of the law to which Jesus, when he saw that the scribe had answered wisely, said “….thou art not far from the kingdom of God….” (Mark 12:34). Is this not our objective as well, to be ever closer to the Kingdom of God? Secondly, we should remember always to link to this Greatest Commandment that other saying of the Master that gives to us the practical understanding of how to love one’s self plus the practical instruction on how it is that we CAN Love our neighbour; He tells us:
Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them
(Matthew 7:12)
If we were to commit to doing no other thing but these we could be counted in the same light as the scribe. In the practice of these things we will find that all other commandments and all the words of the Master have their root, and that all else can be accomplished through them.
In closing today we take yet another look at our practical understanding of Love as we believe that the Master intended it. This may not be complete nor entirely accurate by the Lord’s standards but it is a practical approach that removes from the definition that emotional attraction and response that we so often attach to His intent in using this word. Love is :
‘In a general sense love is benevolence, good will; that disposition of heart which inclines men to think favorably of their fellow men, and to do them good. In a theological sense, it includes supreme love to God, and universal good will to men’.
Note on the Quote of the Day
This daily blog also has a Quote of the Day which may not be in any way related to the essay. Many of these will be from the Bible and some just prayers or meditations that may have an influence on you and are in line with the subject matter of this blog. As the quote will change daily and will not store with the post, it is repeated in this section with the book reference and comment.
Today’s was a rather wayward post that talks about God and our purpose of GoodWill which is Love in Action from our perspective. Staying with this theme on God and on Love, we present again a Quote of the Day from a little while ago that tells us of the Nature of God and the intended nature of man and we will pick up with this theme in discussion of the second Aspect of God; the Son.
And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us.
God is love;
and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness
in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
There is no fear in love;
but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment.
He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
We love him, because he first loved us.
If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar:
for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen,
how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
And this commandment have we from him,
That he who loveth God love his brother also
