FIRST IS THE GREAT COMMANDMENTS: “The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these” (Mark 12:29-31).

WHAT THEN IS LOVE? In a general sense love is benevolence, good will; that disposition of heart which inclines men to think favorably of their fellow men, and to do them good. In a theological sense, it includes supreme love to God, and universal good will to men. While this IS from an older definition of Charity, which IS rendered in the King James Bible from the same Greek word agape which IS generally rendered as Love, we should amend our own definition here to include the idea that in the reality of Love a man will accord to ALL men ALL things that he would accord to himself and to say that Love IS our thoughts and attitude of the equality of ALL men regardless of their outward nature or appearance…that ALL ARE equally children of Our One God

PLUS THE EVER IMPORTANT AND HIGH IDEAL TAUGHT TO US BY THE CHRIST: “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them” (Matthew 7:12).

In the last essay we discussed again the reality of man: that he IS NOT this body with its attendant personality but rather the Soul which IS reflected for us in the idea of the anointing. We should remember that the very idea of Soul as rendered from the Greek word psuche IS largely misunderstood as men and their doctrines have ever tied the very idea of Soul to the carnal Life of the man in this world. Men have ever failed to see the idea of Life from the perspective of the Christ Within, or from the Apostle John’s teaching on the unction, which IS the anointing, which IS the Christ Within, which IS the personal Christ of everyman.

Much of this failure IS tied to the firm idea of men, the illusory idea that they ARE this walking, thinking and feeling mass of flesh in this world; and to their desire for the idea of everlasting Life in some form to apply to what IS the man in this world which IS the ONLY thing that they ‘truly’ KNOW. We used here the word everlasting which IS the way that aionios IS sometimes rendered to apply the doctrinal logic of the idea, a logic that fails to see the realities of eternity and infinity. It IS in the difficulty of the carnal and finite minds of men to Truly contemplate these ideas that the idea of everlasting IS used.

In everlasting doctrines have their idea of forevermore but the reality of aionios IS much more than this. Aionios has the deeper definition of without beginning and without end and if the many uses of this Greek word in the New Testament were viewed in this Light, perhaps the idea would be better understood and the very idea of the Soul glimpsed. While the carnal and finite mind CAN NOT see these ideas of eternity and infinity clearly, “the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16) CAN. And this “mind of Christ” IS that same unction, that same anointing, from which comes the realization of Truth to the man who IS “transformed by the renewing of your mind“.

We come back here to the way that these things ARE a part of the mysteries that “have been kept secret from the foundation of the world” (Matthew 13:35) and in this we should try to see that worlds may come and go, that they ARE founded and they ARE dissolved, but Life IS eternal. And this brings us back also to the Apostle Paul’s words to the Corinthians that we had been discussing in relation to the role of reincarnation and rebirth; there we found the separation of the body from the “building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens” (2 Corinthians 5:1).

Today we look at this saying in regard to the idea of eternity and here we should try to understand that this house IS the Soul and that it IS ONLY the in the limitations of language that we find the difficulty in understanding Paul’s parabolic idea. And NOT only this, we have also the limitations built by doctrines that desire to see this Life in form as the fullness of a man’s Life as well the limitation imposed by the carnal and finite mind which CAN NOT Truly grasp these ideas. But “the mind of Christ” CAN, the mind that IS Truly renewed according to the apostle’s words which we repeat here again:

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith (Romans 12:1-3).

It IS ONLY in “the renewing of your mind” that a man can begin to grasp the realities that ARE presented and begin to glimpse the greater Truth that he Truly IS “eternal in the heavens“….that he IS without beginning nor end. While even the lexicon’s definitions of aionios show us the deeper realities which we read as: without beginning and end, that which always has been and always will be; without beginning; without end, never to cease, everlasting 2, doctrines have found their own workarounds to match their own views of Life. We should note here that the primary definition IS repeated again but in separate terms; in the primary there IS both without beginning and end while the secondary and tertiary ARE separated into a sort of either or.

In the related Greek word aidios, a synonym according to Thayer’s, we find the doctrinal view more pronounced as the lexicon defines this as eternal and everlasting while Strong’s shows us that this IS: everduring (forward and backward, or forward only):—eternal, everlasting 9. And this IS become the doctrinal view: that when this IS applied to God the idea IS both forward and backward but when applied to man this IS forward only; we should understand here that this IS NOT based in the logical ideas of scripture but in men’s inability to see himself as existing before his own birth into this Life in this world.

In the misunderstanding of these ideas, which IS based in the inability of men to see themselves as anything other than what appears in their reflection coupled with their inability to see past the carnal and the finite mind, we have the confusion that IS found in scripture regarding the Soul, the Spirit and Life itself. The apostle James, from the perspective of the man in this world, asks the question “For what is your life?” and then answers it saying: “It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away” (James 4:14) and amidst the allegories of these words IS the basic Truth.

The Life DOES “appeareth for a little time” as the Soul takes up a form in this world and then, after whatsoever length of Life one may have, the Life “vanisheth away“. The body DOES NOT vanish but the Life that was in the body; the Life that was using the “earthly house of this tabernacle” as Paul shows us IS NOW freed from it and IS yet in its “building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens” (2 Corinthians 5:1). Can we see here the totality of the separation between the Life that IS manifest as the Soul and the body with it attendant personality?

And while most doctrines DO cling to their idea of the eternal nature of the body, that it will at some point in that eternity be united with that spiritual part that has been in some condition, somewhere in heaven or hell, as a glorified body or a resurrection body or, as some believe, some combination of both these ideas. Their yet greater clinging however IS to the personality as most believe that the personality continues beyond the Life of the body and into eternity and in this there IS a fragment of Truth. This same doctrinal belief counts this personality as it IS the Soul.

The personality, the mind and the emotional response of everyman, IS part of the Life of the form in this world; it IS developed in the appearing of the Life in this world and it IS this personality that IS molded, that IS nurtured and indoctrinated, according to whatsoever IS the time and the place of one’s birth. The personality IS one’s selfness in this world; it IS a movable and a changeable part of Earthly Life that IS NOT the consciousness nor the Life that uses the personality as the vehicle of expression in this world. Here we should remember and try to understand that the personality’s expression IS whatsoever IS the focus of the man; if his focus IS on the self in the world then this IS the nature of his expression and if one’s focus IS upon the Truth that IS his Life and his consciousness then it IS this that colors his expression.

It IS ONLY the doctrinal view that puts this personality in the place of the Life, the Soul and the Spirit, and it IS in men’s desire for continuity beyond the grave that has formed the idea that the personality survives in heaven as it did here in this Earth….that it IS just sans the body. Doctrines DO NOT see that there IS a synergy between the body and the personality; that they each rely upon the other throughout Life in this world with the endocrine system creating changes in the mood of the personality and the personality creating changes in the very nature of the body and its ability to respond to psychic changes. What then IS the mood of the personality that appears in heaven or in hell after death? IS it the bright cheery man or the depressed and frightened man and what triggers this mood as there IS NO endocrine system upon which the personality can rely?

There ARE NO answers to these questions in the carnal and the finite mind of men in this world and there IS NO first hand experience to be reported by any save the few who have had what ARE called near-death experiences. But there ARE answers in “the mind of Christ” which IS the mind of everyman who will focus upon the things of God and by measure to those who will strive to DO so. It IS this “mind of Christ” that IS the possession of the man who has True revelation and realization as this “mind of Christ” overtakes the carnal and finite mind and puts the man in a state where it IS the unction that directs the Life.

John tells us that “ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things” and then again that “the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him” (1 John 2:20, 27). In these words we have that KNOWING, that degree of faith and grace, by which we can see the realities of Life and understand, within the constraints of Life in form, the nature of Life and the reality of eternity and infinity. And these constraints ARE NOT deterrents to anything except our ability to express these ideas in the absence of suitable language.

And there should be NO question as to how to have True revelation and realization of this “mind of Christ“, this unction and this anointing, as the answer IS given to us by the Master in His words that we call our trifecta of spiritual reality. It IS these words that define His Presence which IS our realization of the unction and “the mind of Christ“. It IS these words that define for us the way to KNOW the Truth which IS ever the same as to “know all things“. Repeating again our trifecta of spiritual reality:

  • “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free (John 8:31-32).
  • “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 7:21).
  • “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me” (John 14:21-24).

And Paul gives us much instruction in attaining the “glorious liberty of the children of God” as he tells us that we “shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption” (Romans 8:21) which IS our carnal Life in this world. It IS this same idea that he presents in saying that we should “be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God“. We should see here that the idea of prove IS NOT an outward thing but IS one’s realization of “what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God“. The Greek word dokimazo which IS rendered here as prove has the greater meaning of: to recognise as genuine after examination 2 according to the lexicon.

Others render the idea of dokimazo as to “have knowledge of” and as that “you may discern” and for us the idea of discernment seems the more correct as this IS the way that this word IS used by the Master who says “ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time?” (Luke 12:56). In discernment we have that realization that comes in “the renewing of your mind” which in turn IS the product of one’s change of focus where the revelation of the Light of the Soul Transforms the expression and the Life of the man. The greater lesson from Paul’s words here to the Romans IS the Way to have this discernment, this realization of the Truth and of ALL of “what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God“; we read the apostle’s words again saying:

For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not. Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:4-21).

If we can see the next words from Paul as serving a dual purpose we can likely see the more clearly his message and his intent. As he admonishes the reader “not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think” he IS offering a caution against that same drunkenness that he shows us in other places where he uses the idea of methe to make his point. In this idea we should see the same tone as we take from the apostle’s use of the idea of being puffed-up which IS holding a lofty or even proud attitude. These ARE attributes of the carnal mind as it IS the tendency of one to “think of himself more highly than he ought to think“.

Paul continues then to speak of the intended Unity of men and here we should see that it IS the caral attributes of mind that play against this Unity. Paul sees the potential for division and for the lofty attitude of some who may believe that their gift, their amount of grace received, IS better or greater than another’s and, to be sure, the apostle IS NOT ONLY speaking about outward attitudes of grandeur but of one’s own thoughts as well. And so he goes on with specific instructions regarding the thoughts and the outward expression of men who have some measure of Truth that can be expressed according to this list of gifts.

And here we should try to see that ALL of these ARE the providence of the True disciple and ALL ARE a part of the measure of everyman whose focus IS right while individual parts become a man’s expression based in the natural flow of revelation and realization through his Transforming personality. Of the first four parts of these gifts of grace that come into the Life of the man who strives to keep His words we have discussed three. We should remember here that these ideas ARE a part of the greater lesson offered by the apostle; a lesson that shows us the idea of Unity and then shows us that there should be NO lofty or proud attitude attached to one’s expression.

Then, most importantly, the apostle shows us that one should NOT try to express anything more that he may possess; that one should ONLY express whatsoever IS “according to the proportion of faith“. So then one should prophesy ONLY in this proportion and NOT beyond what he may Truly KNOW and here we should interpret this idea as that the man should NOT offer as divinely inspired utterance or revelation 7  that which IS the product of the carnal mind; he should offer ONLY what he can Truly discern of “what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God“.

And this same tone applies to one’s ministering which we should see as his service and understand this in the context of Paul’s previous words saying that the man whose focus IS upon the things of God should “present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service“. Can we see the point here? Can we understand that this IS the expression of the aspirant and the disciple and that this IS his service which can include such other ideas of expression which ALL Truly begin with the sacrifice of the carnal nature.

The next word IS didasko which IS rendered as teacheth and a kindred word that IS rendered here and implied as the teaching. The first IS the activity of teaching others while the other IS whatsoever IS taught. The latter word didaskalia IS most always rendered as doctrine and here we can end with a simplistic interpretation of Paul’s intent which IS that one should NOT teach doctrines but should ONLY teach Truth as this IS revealed to the teacher as divinely inspired utterance or revelation.

We will continue with our thoughts in the next post.

Note on the Quote of the Day

This daily blog also has a Quote of the Day which may not be in any way related to the essay. Many of these will be from the Bible and some just prayers or meditations that may have an influence on you and are in line with the subject matter of this blog. As the quote will change daily and will not store with the post, it is repeated in this section with the book reference and comment.

We repeat here a Quote of the Day that we spent much time with over the course of our essays. In this affirmation we find the Truth of discipleship as we have been ever been expressing and here we can relate our themes of the last few days; “take no thought” for the things of the world and that we approach the Kingdom and discipleship in the nature of the little child, in humbleness, meekness, unashamed in any way and unassuming. The message that this imparts for us today IS that it IS the Soul that is at work in the world of men as it expresses to some degree the purpose, power and the will through Life in this world. These words are from a meditation offered to his students by our Tibetan brother and in which we find greater understanding of the message of the Master. This IS Truly the way of the disciple.

My Soul has purpose, power and will; these three are needed on the Way of Liberation.

My Soul must foster love among the sons of men; this is its major purpose.

I, therefore, will to love and tread the Way of Love. All that hinders and obstructs the showing of the Light must disappear before the purposes of the Soul.

My will is one with the great Will of God;. that Holy Will requires that all men serve. And unto the purposes of the Plan I lend my little will.

Let the peace of God rule in your hearts
